Vidigal, Rio de Janeiro– Everything began when my (Andrea Junqueira) son took his toys to the community – toys which the other children couldn’t afford to have. The other kids wanted to play with my son’s fabricated toys while he wanted to play with their improvised ones. I found it more interesting to have my son creating a toy out of a piece of wood or scrap than playing with a fabricated one. From that time on I started to work on activities based on recreated objects, gathering at the beginning a small group of children at my house. The number of participants and activities has grown, we now work with adults and children in the Vidigal community offering services like cleaning of the community, recycling, recycling courses within the public education system, helping with services such as: doctors, schools etc., citizenship orientation, help with school work, painting, mosaic, and candle classes, among many others.
